Execution Deadlines and Rules for MotoGP Double Long Lap Penalties

A Grand Prix motorcycle rider leans through a turn on a racetrack.

Notification and the Compliance Window

When race stewards impose a double Long Lap penalty, official notification is sent directly to the rider's on-board dashboard display while simultaneously appearing on team timing and television monitors. Under FIM regulations, the countdown to serve the sanction does not begin immediately upon the infraction. Instead, the lap count officially begins the first time the rider crosses the finish line following the dashboard signal. From that crossing, the competitor has a five-lap window to complete both passes.

Navigating the Penalty Route

Understanding how MotoGP double long lap penalties are served requires looking at both the layout and the strict procedural constraints imposed on each pass. The route is an elongated asphalt corridor located on the outside runoff area of a designated turn, clearly defined by painted white lines established ahead of practice. The rider must complete this loop on two separate laps, staying entirely within the boundary lines, avoiding any overtaking within the lane, and safely rejoining the circuit without impeding or endangering other competitors. Breaching boundary lines can result in stewards requiring the loop to be repeated or issuing an additional penalty.

Caution Windows and Noncompliance Escalation

Track conditions can modify the serving timeline. If yellow flags or caution signals cover the penalty corner, riders are barred from entering the penalty lane. Each unusable lap caused by caution conditions adds an extra lap to the rider's compliance window. If a race is halted before the penalty is completed, it must be served during the restart or resolved via an equivalent time penalty determined by stewards. If a penalty cannot be signaled prior to the finish, a post-race equivalent time penalty is applied instead. However, if a rider simply fails to complete both loops within the five-lap window, the penalty escalates to a pit lane ride-through, and failing to serve that ride-through within three laps results in a black flag.
