How MotoGP Ride-Through Deadlines, Speed Limits, and Red Flags Work

A motorcycle racer leans into a turn on a paved racing circuit beside a painted kerb.

Notification and the Three-Lap Serving Deadline

When stewards issue a ride-through penalty during a Grand Prix, the decision is officially transmitted straight to the rider's dashboard, sent to the team via monitors, and often backed up by a physical pit board. The official countdown to comply does not begin the instant the infraction occurs; instead, the lap count officially begins on the rider's first crossing of the finish line after the dashboard message is dispatched. From that moment, the rider must enter pit lane within three laps. Missing that entry deadline triggers an immediate black flag, resulting in disqualification from the race.

Pit Lane Protocol and Pit Limit Escalations

Understanding the exact MotoGP ride-through penalty serving rules is vital to avoiding further operational errors during execution. When serving the sanction, a rider must continuously traverse the pit lane without stopping before rejoining the track. Additionally, riders must strictly adhere to the pit lane speed limit under Art. 1.21.14. Speeding during the penalty run leads to swift escalation: the standard consequence is a Double Long Lap penalty, though stewards have the discretion to impose alternative sanctions, and repeated speeding infractions later in the race draw even harsher measures.

Race Interruptions and Post-Race Conversions

If a red flag interrupts a race before a rider can complete an active ride-through, the obligation carries over and must be served after the restart of the second part of the race. A different process applies if Race Direction is unable or chooses not to signal the penalty before the race concludes. In that specific scenario, rather than facing disqualification, the rider receives a post-race time penalty calculated to match the standard time lost during a ride-through, an exact figure established and communicated to teams prior to the start of the race.
